Railroad of Reconstruction What is the primary goal of reconstruction? Reunification, punishment, civil rights, other? (Thesis)
The primary goal of our Reconstruction plan is to rebuild the Nation without punishment or vengeance, but equal opportunities of economic success for all. Also to rebuild the infrastructure of the Nation by building a railroad that connects the North and South together figuratively and literally. It will replace and improve the railroads destroyed by Sherman. The railroad will be built by ex confederate soldiers and freed slaves giving economic possibilities to all. The work groups will not be segregated into Black and White groups, but both races will be working together.
What should be done to the ex-Confederates?
Former Confederate Officers and Confederate Officials are not allowed to hold office. However they are still given the rights of any United States citizen. These restrictions only apply to ranked officials from the Confederacy. Men who were enlisted and drafted into the Confederate cause will be given new opportunities for economic re-establishment via construction of a new railroad. If they opt to not work for the Northern-Southern Railroad Project then they shall be pardoned of the crime of treason.
What should be done for the freedmen?
They will be offered a job in the Northern-Southern Railroad Project where they will be paid the same wages as white men. They will have equal citizenship, the right to vote, and access to public education. They will be protected by federal law so that no state can enforce segregation or take away their rights as citizens. Their personal safety will be given by The Department of Homeland Security along with local unbiased peacekeepers.
Who should be able to vote and hold office in the new Southern state governments?
Democracy is still a thing, and Southern states can still elect their own representatives. However, those who have been Confederate officials cannot be elected. All citizens have the right to vote on who represents them regardless of color.
What requirements must be met before states regain full rights and representation?
The Ten Percent Plan will be put in use. The logic behind using Lincoln’s original plan is reunification of the entire country as soon as possible. This plan will allow for the return of our fellow states back into the Union. We must not have vengeance for the South, but instead regain their trust and dedication not to the state, but to the country as a whole.
How should the Southern economy be restored?
The Southern economy will be restored by the building of the railroad. After the railroad is built it will be used to spread the industrial north into the south. Which after the railroad is built the factories can give jobs to all men promising an economically stable lifestyle.
What role should Union troops play in policing, governing, or rebuilding the South?
A portion of the Union Army will be trained for specialized missions, such as infiltration and information gathering. These soldiers will be hand picked based on ability and willingness to fight. A curfew will be strictly enforced, and any malicious act against any citizen will be met with appropriate force. These soldiers have immunity from certain laws when combating terrorist and insurgent groups such as the KKK. An even smaller force will be trained as paramilitary police officers who are disguised as ordinary citizens, going undercover to combat terrorist groups. These soldiers and paramilitary groups will be known as The Department of Homeland Security and they will have as much funding as is required to maintain the peace.
